How do I save power when i leave my computer idle to download stuff on flashget, veoh ect?
My internet service is very slow, which is at 60 KBps at maximum. I often leave my computer on to download large files such as games which are in the gigabyte size area. How do i save power but still continue downloading on Flashget?
The main thing that eats power inside the cabinet is your hard disk, but you can't turn that off possibly. For the rest, it's better that you use the Power Management options from your Windows Control Panel. Windows XP and Vista efficiently can save your power by turning off (well almost) the devices not in use. But all the peripherals connected to your computer does still remain active (to know if they are being called) but on a low-energy state, like your Optical drive shuts down when not in use.
It's better to turn off the monitor, and still better unplug it than to leave it in standby mode as the monitor still consumes quite a bit of power in this way, and even some power when turned off by the monitor button. It it's always better to use a SATA Hard-disc and Green PC Motherboards to better save energy.
Additionally, you can use a Multimeter, easily available, to get the reading of your power consumption (Watt-hour, Voltage, Ampere).
