Do you need stitches if it is a small wound that didn't bleed much?
I somehow managed to cut my wrist on a ceramic bowl that broke as I was trying to catch it. It's only about half of an inch long, with about 1.5 centimeters being a lot deeper than the rest. It went all the way through the "white" layer of skin and into the darker red layer. It didn't really bleed that much. What worries me is that it was at an angle and the two edges are not touching--there is about a 3 millimeter gap. Not trying to be a hypochondriac, but I just don't want to get an infection or have it heal funky, since it is right on my wrist and I don't want a scar there looking like I cut myself on purpose.
I know that this won't be a satisfying answer, but this is difficult to assess from afar. Depth is certainly a concern for determining whether stitches are appropriate or not (can you see any fatty tissue?), and so is width. You say there is a 3mm gap. Is it easy to pinch the wound closed? If so, just keeping it bandaged (after you have cleaned the wound) will promote healing. If it's difficult to pinch closed, you may notice some scarring. You could try using a butterfly closure (found with the band-aids at the drug store) to keep the wound closed as well. If there is still doubt, you could try the Urgent Care or Fast Track, depending on what facilities exist in your area.
